returned error 11 in system messages file

Hi,
We have XI 5.4.3.
For some reason we are seeing thousands of line of this in our /var/log/messages (RHEL6):
May 24 16:30:29 bed-600-124 nagios: job 63223 (pid=7762): read() returned error 11
I've read a couple of posts but still don't understand why so many of these occur. Just a short bit ago Nagios was sending out dozens of notifications that hosts were down, but they obviously weren't. That's when I went to logs to attempt understand why the notifications were going out an came across this one in the system messages file.
Any known reason why this error get thrown?
