Notifications not sending out

I have just setup NagiosXI on my network and have configured a host and service for monitoring. The service is a ping test to a particular server to alert me if there is a network connectivity issue to the server. I have set up the service and am trying to test it out to make sure alerts are being sent, however i seem to not be getting them.
When looking at the Service Status Detail section of ping service i set up, it is currently in a 'Critical' Service State (i am dropping icmp packets to the server to test out this functionality). When i click on the Advanced tab, it shows Critical State, Duration of 2hr 25min, times between checks, and under Last Notification, it states 'Never'. The green dot next to Notifications is there. If i go to 'Configure' tab and check the config, under Notifications, i have the service configured to 'Send a notification immediately' when a problem is detected, its sending a notification ever 10 minutes, and i have the following under 'Send alert notifications to:'
-Myself
-an Administrator account
-a Contact group that has two user accounts under it that i want to receive these notification emails.
None of the above are getting the alerts.
When i look further into this under the Core Config Manager, i click on the service that i want to configure (same as above) and go to the 'Alert Settings' tab. I confirm that the above contacts/contact groups are configured. The Notification period is set to 'xi_timeperiod_24x7' which i assume is 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. All Notification options are pressed (they are gray instead of white). the Notification interval is 10 minutes. This has been saved a few times.
Next i have tried going to the Notifications Options section and under the 'Send Test Notifications' page i have tested both mine, and another user that is part of the Contact group listed above, and both test notifications were received. I believe this is due to the service stating that it has never sent an notification, but im not sure what option i am missing in order to get these being sent.
I am currently using NagiosXI version 5.4.11, there are updates available, so im not sure if this will resolve this, but im going to post it anyways just in case a Nagios support has other things to try. Thanks,
EDIT: Confirming that the 'Enable Notifications' check box is checked under Notification Preferences and all email options are checked
