Evaluation VM Issue

Hello:

I am in the process of evaluating the XI product. For testing and proof of concept, I wish to either use Vmware Player or Server (We will host the production system, if we move forward, from a VmWare ESX or Vsphere host).

I opted to originally use the Vm Server installed on top of Windows 2008, although there seems to be a bug where the app will not allow me to import the vm into inventory. I have not been able to find a solution for this. So, I tried Vm Player, which works well, until I try to monitor anything outside of the host Windows machine. The issue is with the network bridging.

From what I can tell there are two issues preventing me from networking outside of the host server:
1. Virtual network adaptors - I set a static address that corresponds to my physical network, although they show as an unidentified network. When I look at the IP properties they reflect the IP that I assigned, but when I look at details in the Network and Sharing console, I see 192.x.x.x as the IP. I found a few articles stating that I needed to adjust the virtual network properties, but Vm Player doesnt seem to have these options.
2. I found an article that states to ensure that this process is running in the vm - /usr/bin/vmnet-bridge - This file is not present in my nagiosxi vm.

I really like what I have seen so far in the product, but it is necessary to get my networking fixed to really evaluate the product. Any help would be nice!!

Thank you,
Jason

In VM Player you should be able to set the network connection to NAT and access services outside of the host server (provided that the host server doesn't have a firewall)

Which leads to my next question... Is Windows Firewall (or any other) turned on? Do you have your VM Player in the exclude list?

Thank you for your response. I have my virtual network set to bridged, but will try the NAT option. As I understood it, bridged would allow me to network outside of the host server, where NAT would only allow me to network with the vm’s host server.

Host server's firewall is turned off.

Still wondering why I cannot simply add the Nagios vm that I downloaded from the site into inventory. While I can create and import other vm’s, the nagios vm continues to fail. This has forced me to attempt to install my own instance of Cent OS and install the Nagios system from scratch.

Thanks.

Jason

Got Nagios running. It was a good experience installing the system from scratch, as I really dont have much experience with Linux. I'm now monitoring some Windows servers, web sites, and now am trying to get Nagios to capture snmp from my Cisco ASA.
