Is the other functionality working properly now? I'm wondering if there was some corruption in the retention.dat.

yes, system load has drastically come down,
web gui is working fine on applying settings and making changes.
I have noticed that this new retention.dat is just 5.5M where as the file I deleted was around 600M in size. (should have copied it before rm -rf)

There was a bug in the earlier version that actually made many duplicates of all of the comments that have ever been made on the system which is what was ballooning the retention.dat.

Hi Guys,
after deletion of retention file, I used the system for couple of weeks before updating to version 5.5.6.
yesterday I updated the version to 5.5.6 and have noticed since then the load average has increased and have not settled down after almost around 24 hours.
the retention file size has not increased though but it takes couple of minutes to get the service check back on GUI after a nagios service restart.
has this retention file issue fixed in this version? and system load issue is related?

Please PM me your /usr/local/nagios/etc/nagios.cfg and your /usr/local/nagios/etc/ndo2db.cfg again, the one from the profile is still showing the 2014 date so I want to make sure your debug log settings as back to normal.

The files are proper.

Did the load level off or is it still high? From your profile it looks like it was sending a few scheduled reports which could cause it to spike.

What is the output of this command?

Yes,load is not weirdly high now, but not like how it was before.
