Wizards and Templates

Has anything changed since this several-year-old thread? https://support.nagios.com/forum/viewto ... f=6&t=1975

Is there anyway to configure the monitoring wizards to use our own templates?

I spent a lot of time setting up inheritances and settings in custom templates only to find that I can't use them if I want to use a wizard. Wizards are great at server monitoring because of how they can make it easy to pick/choose which services/daemons need monitoring. But if I have to go back to every service and move it to one of my templates... I may as well just type things in a config file again... which is what I was trying to get away from.

Does anyone have a solution? I've watched videos, read threads, and have thrown my hands in the air.

Or should I throw away my templates and use the "xiwizard" templates? If I do... I'm afraid that a future upgrade may overwrite my settings -- what are the chances?

Hi Mike,

Not without actually changing the default template for the wizard ( see Writing Custom Wizards). This is located in the template directory for the wizard.

Perhaps you are already doing this but you can specify the order of precedent for templates in Nagios. So for example, you can add your custom template to the host or service and then increase the order of preference so the custom template will take precedence over the wizard template.

Another option is to use the bulk Modifications Tool. If you have a large number of hosts or services to change, you change the template with this tool.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Yes, thanks, I arrived at this idea on the ride home one day. Thanks for your response, it confirms what I came up with.

@rocheryderm, Thanks for the update. Would you have any other questions for us before I close this ticket as resolved?
