Leading practice question for server with two names

Hi. We have a host that has a function name and an encoded name used to identify it in the infrastructure. All but a few hosts are identified by their encoded infrastructure name.

For example, we have service.company.com that is also named as luseastp00.company.com. Most of the time we just use the luseastp00 naming for hosts.

What is the advised way to cover this? Does the "display name" in the configuration have any use?
Thanks.

The "display name" is not used in the other configuration objects. For example, if you were to assign that host to a hostgroup, the "Host Name" is used.

The "display name" is there to help identify the host in the web UI and default to the host name if nothing is entered. There's also the "alias" which is a longer text version to help identify that particular host.

Hopefully, that answers your question. Let me know if you need clarification on anything.
