Hi,

I used the bulk modification tool to add a free variable to multiple hosts via hostgroup.
the tool successfully added the variable to all the hosts in the CCM, but the hosts don't get flagget as "not applied", so when I apply the configuration, they hosts don't actually get the new variable.
in order to apply the new variable I deactivated and reactivated the hosts, so they went into "not applied" status, and after applying, nagios XI reread the whole configuration.

is this normal behaviour? did I miss something during the bulk modification process?

I was not able to recreate the issue. I tested it in Nagios XI 5.6.10. After adding a free variable to hosts via hostgroup, saving the changes, and going to the CCM, I see the following message:

Configuration not applied. There are changes to the database configuration, apply configuration needed.

Applying configuration adds the free variable to the hosts as expected.

What is the version of Nagios XI and Bulk Modifications Tool component that you are currently using? Is it possible that you have mismatch between your php and system time? Check the "Date/Time" section in your system profile:

Admin > System Config > System Profile > View System Info

Nagios XI version: 5.6.10
bulkmodifications 2.2.0

what I did is:
Bulk Modification Tool -> Add free variables -> Select Hosts using Host Groups -> selected the group with some hosts -> insert a new variable

in CCM I check on the various hosts that the tool modified and noticed that only the hosts that have no other free variable are set as "Not Applied". if the host already has other free variables before adding with the bulk modification tool, it will have the new variable, but the status is "Applied', so when I Apply the configuration these hosts will not load the new variable.

I was able to verify the fist part - when the host does not have a free variable, it's status is shown as "Not Applied". It it already has a free variable defined, the status is wrongly shown as "Applied', even though a new variable has been added. I will be filing an internal bug report on the issue.
Having said that, the CCM still reports that there are changes detected and that configuration needs to be applied.

I was not able to recreate the second issue. When I apply configuration, the new free variable is added to all hosts, that are members of the hostgroup.

what I ment is that for the hosts that are showing "Applied". when i then apply the configuration I can see the new free variable in the CCM, but not in the "Host Status Detail" page. I need to "Save" again the same host in the CCM, even without modifyind anything, and the Applying the configuration again. only then I will be able to see the free variable in the "Host Status Detail" as well.

Oh, you are talking about the "Free Variables" tab under the "Host Status Detail" page... Now I see - this is a different bug. I was able to reproduce it on my test XI machine. I filed an internal bug report with task_id=14882. I expect this to be fixed in the next release of Nagios XI.
