Nagios Support Forum

Can you guys point me to resources that will help me understand what makes nagios tick?
I know (or i have strongly guessed) that LAMP, css, mysql and maybe others is whats used to make nagios what it is.

my question is what reference material do you use, or what would you suggest a beginner should start with other than the nagios documentation? This will help me to better understand this awesome tool, and ask questions that make sense.

I do thank you guys for any replies, you can pm me if you want, I am desperate to get the best possible foundation possible.

my writing style can be a bit confusing so I will sum up this way: can you point me to the resources you wish people would read before they even install nagios? or the things they should have an understanding of?

Honestly, the inner workings of Nagios are pretty complex, and to that end are even more complex when you add in the unlimited possibilities because the whole system is modular meaning there are endless amounts of plugins/components/wizards etc that can be added.

I guess i am a little frustrated because nagios IS very complex. my frustration comes from the fact that my role requires me to manage nagios, but my training was sub par. Trust me I am not whining, just keepin it real. that's the nature of the IT beast.

I know It's going to take me at least a year to at the least understand linux,and even more to really understand Nagios.
The thing is I realize that at my level, I don't even know how to ask the right questions, or be able to provide you guys with the data you would need from me in order to help me when I need it. A friend told me that i should learn LAMP, because it will go a long way towards making my life easier. It got me thinking 'what else should I understand?" i am in a good place because i have all the funding i need for training, but I just didn't know what my training should focus on. Thanks for the impute bro, If you think of anything else I would appreciate it.

If you are thinking "that depends on what you are trying to do in nagios, or what you are responsible for, the answer is easy: "It all".

hence the huge training budget lol That should have been a tip off to me to tell em no. =p

Your friend was right. The unfortunate thing that I think your friend didn't mention is what LAMP stands for..

So, the first item in the list, is in fact Linux...
