Notification intervals and service escalations

I have some questions about the way notification intervals work with service checks and service escalations:
1) If I set a service to have notification_interval = 0, this will send only one alarm per notification_option?
2) If I have a service's notification_interval set to 0, how does that affect service escalations? Will the service escalation ever be triggered? Example, if I create a service escalation with first_notification=2, with a different contact_group than the original service check.
