I am looking for a good way to separate prod and test notifications for servers. Our org doesn't normally send sms to the phone for test servers. We only have it setup currently to text us for production server problems. What is the best way to setup notifications to segment these alerts? Emails would be for prod and test alerts and sms would only be for production server alerts.

There are a couple of ways you could accomplish this.

First I should probably ask, do you even want notifications for your development environment? You can turn them off by navigating to the Configure section > click My Account Settings under More Options on the left pane > then click Notification Preferences > and uncheck Enable notifications if you would like notifications to be off.

You could also change the email address that one of the servers is sending notifications from and then filter them using an Outlook rule. The address that notifications are sent from can be changed by navigating to the Admin section > clicking on Email Settings under System Config > and altering the content of the Send From field.

You can change the notification method on one to SMS and the other to email. Just click on your username in the top right, then click Notification Methods to toggle SMS or email on or off.

i see that manual method but that also affects getting prod alerts to sms over the weekend. So far i have seen is i can go into the host and tweak the notification period to workdays only for the test servers. I have yet to fully test that but so far that looks like the best option to set and just leave without manual intervention every Friday.

I would take the time to read into Escalations as they can be very powerful.

thanks that is what i was looking for. i could send our normal alerts which would be our first line to a distribution group and then only send the escalations directly to us via email/ sms.
