Downtime not applying to nested host groups

I'm not sure if I have this configured wrong or if this is a known issue, perhaps its not meant to function in this way. I have set up a recurring downtime on Friday afternoons that would apply to an internal application that we have. There are several versions of the application, each of which have been associated with a different host group. I then added all of those host groups to a parent host group encompassing all versions that I applied recurring downtime to.
When the downtime is triggered, it does not appear to be flowing down to the hosts in the child host groups. There is no graphic indication of the downtime, the Seinfeld black and white cookie, and alerts are still going out via SMS and email. I'm not sure where else to check the configuration, but this is causing me some grief from support personnel. I don't recall reading anything in the core documentation stating that inheritance wouldn't work in this way. It mentions it can go several layers deep, however generally don't go more than two levels for ease of management.
Can anyone advise if there is something that I am missing or may not have configured properly?
Version information: Nagios XI 5.6.13
