VPN bandwidth services stopped working

Our hosts with VPN bandwidth services stopped working about a month ago. What it took to get them working again was adding a duplicate of the host (and all of its services) through the Network Switch/Router configuration wizard. After applying the configuration, now we see VPN bandwidth working on the original host.
What are possible cause(s) to our problem in the first place? What can we do to prevent this from happening again in the future?

We might need more details on what was not working because there could be a few reasons they stopped working.
One thing I can think of is that VPN connections are dynamic and if the devices were reconfigured or restarted, that could re-build the indexes used to gather the bandwidth and cause zero bandwidth data to be generated.
The MRTG application use the index to gather the data for a specific port and it they change, it will stop gathering the data for that specific port.

Some time a while back (I don't know the exact date), I purged the /etc/mrtg/conf.d subdirectory in an attempt to troubleshoot something else. Would that have screwed up the performance graphing for VPN, in addition to other network connections on more appliances?

Yes, that is exactly what caused the issue. Those files are needed by MRTG to gather the bandwidth data for the plugin that XI runs.
What ever device you have configured for Bandwidth are now not receiving data so either the files have to be put back from a backup or the Wizard will have to be re-ran to recreate them.
