Hi all! I need to set up a email notification system through Nagios for my boss's personal email. I really am kind of over whelmed at all the information on the internet, it seems like every website I go to or try to read has different steps, different lines of commands. Im not sure how to figure out what is legit and what isnt. If I could just get a push in the right direction on how to set this up? Thanks so much

Hi Wade,

Yes, tons of stuff out there! For any kind of installation or upgrade, I highly recommend following our official docs.

Are you using Core or Nagios XI? Here the docs on notifications in Nagios Core.

It's pretty straightforward, you'll need to set up your contacts with a valid email address and enable the default notification handlers. You can test out the notifications by sending custom messages via the web interface.

If it's not working, check through the recommendations in the following guide. The nagios.log and the mail log are essential for figuring these types of issues out.

Good Luck!

Thank you so much for the reply!, I know I have taken forever to reply to this and I have just been super busy.
So Im just a little overwhelmed with the amount of information that is different on every single resource I see. We have 3-4 nagios boxes deployed on our network from previous network admins, when I go in to try and see the config files they wrote, even those are all different. I just cannot seem to zero in on a standard way of doing this.

Where I'm at now, I edited the contact.cfg list with with the emails I want to be sent out, and also the filters for when I want them sent, when I go to restart nagios service, I get a very generic error stating Nagios service cannot restart. if there is any step by step documentation you may know of I would really appreciate it. Nothing else in my job is linux related except this, I don't care to learn it at all....but I need to try to produce some results for this issue and I just am kind of lost on how to do that.
