NCPA Wizard always goes back to default after re-edit

Hey,

I'am configuring a new environment and I do want to use the automated Agent deployment.
What I also would like to use is the possibility to make changes on configured agents.

But what is most annoying is that I always have to run the ncpa wizard in order to make a change and the wizard always forgets what is configured.
So if I hve set a bunch of services to monitor and all Thresholds, I have to set them all over again each time I whant to change any single value.

Can you improve on that? What I would propose is the following.

1. bulk changes on deployed wizards (selection by list or hostgroup or whatever)
2. choices of services/processes in a listbox rather than in a dropdown
3. already customized checks and thresholds must be kept when re-editing
4. deploy new Plugins via Agent to a list of hosts

Also when I hit the edit Button in the agent list I'd rather expect to be led to a reconfiguration page of the checks the agent does rather than the connection settings.
I hope you can somehow relate to what I said and can make my life easier by providing the above listet sometime soon.

THX

Hi,

Thanks for your feedback and suggestions for improvements. I can submit a feature request on your behalf. I have a couple of options to mention ( if you haven't tried them yet). You can save some of those wizard settings as a template and re-use them next time you run the wizard. It's really the last part of the notification setup, but it can save time.

Wizard Templates are covering the following guide:
https://assets.nagios.com/downloads/nag ... ios-XI.pdf
So if I hve set a bunch of services to monitor and all Thresholds, I have to set them all over again each time I whant to change any single value.
You may be able to update some settings faster using the Bulk Mods Tool. For example, if you would like to change a single config option on a bunch of services.

Hello Benjamin,

can I change a check from within the ncpa configuration by using bulk mod tool?
It is more like when I whant to change something in ncpa agent management.

Also I will maybe have a set of thresholds defined in ncpa agent management for a single host. I wouldn't have a template for each of em.
So keeping in the Agent mngmnt what is already configured for each host would be far easier than making a template for every host that is configured out of line from the others.

I see the remote management of the agent as a huge advantage to nrpe, but I think it needs to be a bit more comfy. I Think as long as my env there is still reasonably small I can work with templates, but I would be most grateful If you could get my suggestion to the devs.

Hi Grtx,

I will definitely pass along your suggestions. I just ran the NCPA wizard and then used the Bulk Mod Tool to change the arguments on one of the service checks, and that does work.

As a side note, we also have the Bulk Cloning and Import Wizard that can save some time. For example, you can run the wizard one time and then clone all those check results to a list of IP addresses.

Thanks for the feedback and let us know if you have any more questions.

Hey Benjamin,

I have startet on implementing our Data into the new NagiosXI INtsance. especially using the ncpa agent since I have managed to get it permitted. I tried your suggestion to use templates for ncpa wizard configuration, but yet again I must say I'm quite underwhelmed.
When Itry to set up a new Server in ncpa I can select a template and then select finish with template. But it seems that step 3 of the wizard is the first step the templates is used in whilst in step 2 none of the configurations I'd wish to be implied are taken from that template.
As the most fiddeling is in step 2 it would be most useful to have the settings of step 2 in the template.
Thus I will now have to set all those ticks und thresholds in the wizard per host.
Is there a way I do not actually know of on how to make this more convenient? The ncpa remote management (and the promise of it's possibilities) was one major drive for us to buy into nagiosXI again...

Hi,

One workaround I can suggest would be to use the ability add services via a host group. So for example, if you have a common set of servers running the same checks with NCPA, you can group all of these devices into a common host group. Then run the NCPA wizard on one of the hosts, and assign the services to the other using a host group. This would help simplify the assingment of the services.

All the hosts would all need to have the same community string.

We have a video on how to set this up.
