Are the Nagios clones/wrappers worth it?

Work in a small shop with just under 300 bare metal devices to monitor and a handful of VMs on several of those. In the past we've used a collection of homebrew tools for monitoring, but are realizing that's not going to scale with our rate of growth. I've been looking into Icinga, Nagios Core, Zabbix, and the usual FOSS monitoring tools, but didn't want to rule out any of the wrappers/extensions of Nagios like OpsView, GroundWorks, or otherwise as they seem to really simplify configuration and well, they're downright prettier.

My questions I guess are:

Do you use or have you used any of the products that use Nagios Core as a backend and if so were they worth the cost premium over getting Nagios XI?

If you got to choose your solution, why did you pick the product you went with over another? So many of them seem to offer pretty much the same thing.

Lastly, what's the biggest road block you run into when working with your current monitoring software?

Thank you for taking the time to respond. I've spent a lot of time lurking this subreddit and have picked up a lot of great tips from beards clearly much longer than my own.
