Hi,

I just tried to perform an Upgrade of NagiosXi from 5.6.12 to current and discovered the CentOS 6 is no longer supported as is end of life. I'll need to transition to CentOS 7 or 8, I was thinking of 8 because it's newer, would anyone recommend against this? My main question is, is there any documentation on the transition process?

Is it a mater of firing up a new VM with CentOS 8. Doing a new install of NagiosXi and then restoring from backup? can it be that simple? probably not. How would licencing work as there will be a point I'll have two VMs with different IPs running Nagios.

I don't have any info on the actual upgrade process, but I wanted to point out that CentOS 8 is in dispute with Redhat now... they're cutting it short, and changing it to be their beta test platform, rather than their binary equivalent downstream. Announcement was made in Dec, and caused an immediate backlash, but to my knowledge, they're sticking with it. CentOS 8 will only be supported until Dec this year. CentOS 7, maybe longer. But the original founder of CentOS made the announcement that they're starting up Rocky Linux in a few months to fill in that hole that Redhat is taking CentOS from.

We have fully tested Cent 8 and that is an option. It's also worth pointing out the Cent 7 will be supported until June 30, 2024. And we also fully support Ubuntu and Debian, so there are options if you plan to migrate away from Cent OS.

The restore script does all the heavy lifting so it's a simple process. Some plugins may have dependencies and those may need to be resolved during the migration.

A few notes:

* You must migrate between the same versions of XI. You can download older versions from this page:

Also, your Nagios XI allows for 3 activations, production, test and backup, so you can set up a test server for the migration, and switch it over once you're ready to minimize any disruptions to your company's monitoring.
