Nagios to Nagios solution?

Hi, I have a situation that I hope there is an easy solution for:
We have two enclaves with a communication circuit connecting them together and a Nagios server monitoring each site. We're trying to introduce some redundancy into our monitoring so we added all servers from both sites to each Nagios host list. What we found is that the SNMP traffic alone overwhelmed our available bandwidth for the cross-site circuit and caused holy hell with everything.
So... we're looking for another way to handle this. Is there any way for a Nagios server to send its query results as a blob to another Nagios server? That would eliminate the need to query across the sites.
Or maybe there is something else we can do? I'm open to suggestions.
Thank you.
