Fresh Install - Linux Filesystem Sizing Requirements

Hello,

The company I am employed by purchased Nagios XI late last year. We are in the process of building a server to install Nagios XI to. We are having an issue finding information about filesystem sizes for Nagios XI. Every document I can find just says to allocate 120+ GB of disk space for Nagios XI (https://assets.nagios.com/downloads/nag ... ements.pdf) but doesn’t go into any further detail than that. On our linux servers however, we like to be precise and would, rather than allocating all of that space to the root filesystem, would like to be specific with our filesystem sizes. There is a document that displays that four main directories are created during the install (https://assets.nagios.com/downloads/nag ... ucture.pdf) but does not display the usages of these directories as far as space requirements go.

Assuming we have 500 Monitored Nodes and 2500 Monitored Services, how would we best allocate the required 120+ GB?

For instance we need some information like the below (the numbers were put at random and do not reflect any real information),

40G /
20G /usr/local/nagios
20G /etc/nagiosql
40G /store

Please get back to me at your earliest convenience,

Rainger Rossway

Hi Rainger,

The main drivers of disk usage are going to be the backups located on the server and the performance data (RRD files). The performance data is located in the /usr/local/nagios, so you'll want to increase the size of the directory to about 40 GB. The backup directory, /store, can be reduced to 20 GB. However, you'll want to clean up older backups from this folder from time to time.

Hopefully, that helps answer your question. Overall Nagiso XI is very efficient when it comes to disk space.

Some more information on RRD files and storage.

So you are saying the below Filesystem sizes will suffice? Is there any need to increase over 120G total right off the bat?
40G /
40G /usr/local/nagios
20G /etc/nagiosql
20G /store

This should be sufficient based on the quantity of hosts and services you are monitoring
