Disk usage typically checks how much space is used on a disk/FS. It will alert if the usage is above what's defined in the service.
Host down usually checks via ICMP (ping) so if ping from the Nagios to the checked host fails, the host shows down..
Both depend on how the checks were defined so you need to look at the service definitions to know for sure.
