Nagios vs System Center Essentials.

Post by abacabb »

I know how to use both softwares. However, the company that I am working for now wants a detailed comparison between the two (pros/cons) prior to making a decision. In terms of monitoring, is there anything that Nagios can do that SCE cannot do?

Other than having everything Microsoft, why would someone go SCE instead of nagios?

SCE doesn't seem to be in the same category of software as Nagios. Nagios is great for monitoring, alerting, reporting, and graphing of networked devices. I haven't used SCE, but it seems to be more about management of IT resources -- installing/configuring workstations, provisioning VMs, etc. I do see that it does monitoring as well, but I couldn't find any information at all about whether it had a plugin system or what. Nagios' big strength is that you can extend it with new functionality fairly easy, and as a result there really isn't anything it can't monitor.
