Choosing a GSM modem

Hi,
I have a Nagios 3.0.6 installation which I want to be able to send SMS messages. All the documentation I can find on GSM modems relates to Nagios XI and usually large banks of multiple modems which is way over the top for what we need. All I want is a basic (cheap!) GSM modem, ideally USB connected although we might be able to manage serial, that can text out and possibly receive texts back (although that's not essential). I'd be very grateful for some recommendations on what modems are available and will work with Nagios 3, or whether I should go with a basic USB-connected mobile phone. Surely lots of people do this already? What do you use?
Thanks!
Simon.

Where are you located Simon? Differing countries have differing laws about acceptable limits for wireless devices.

Anyone got any tips on this? Surely there must be other UK users who've already done this - I don't want to reinvent the wheel!

Thanks :)
