Same service check, different contact list?

Hi all,

Is there a simple way to send additional notifications for a service to a subset of the hosts to a different contact list? Not sure if that makes sense... I'll try to explain.

Let's say I have a service that checks disk space on Linux servers. So I have added the host group "linux-server" to that service which is 100 hosts. But, there's a subset of those linux servers, say 10 hosts, that have additional admins that need to be notified. We don't want to notify those admins about the other 90 hosts that they don't care about. So, for those 10 hosts, I add them to a group called "linux-server-special"... I can create a second service and only add the linux-server-special group to it, but then that results in the check being performed twice.

Is there a better way to do this?

Thanks!

How about not sending the notifications with the service, but setting up an escalation for the 90 hosts to send to the admins?

Hrm... I'll have to dig into how escalations work. I haven't used those yet..

I'll give this a shot, though.

Thinking out loud here ... Is there a way to tell a service to use the contact lists from the host? ie, I can specify the additional contact groups on the host level and have the service inherit those groups... That would solve this quite nicely, I think...

There is no way to do this at present, but shortly when we release 2012 enterprise edition, there will be a bulk modification tool that can do this.

It should be released in the next couple weeks.

Cool. So we're currently on 2011R3.2.. I see that 2011R3.3 is out and I was planning on updating. Is it better to wait for 2012 to release, or go to R3.3 first?

It is up to you - there is no harm in upgrading to R3.3.
