Good day,
I am just new here and have a question about installing Wireguard client next to Nagios Core 4.50.

In my home network I have Nagios Core running on a Raspberry Pi 2B for monitoring an external VPS-server hosted by a provider.

I found that my situation is very unusual. It took me about a month to find some information on how to set up and configure my Raspberry Pi with Nagios Core. With a little help from a friendly provider I succeeded to get it working.

For more security reason now I would like to use VPN within my network.
In my Fritz!box 7530 router I can configure to use VPN (Wireguard or IPSec).
I would like to use Wireguard; on all devices in my network I then have to install Wireguard client.

My question to the point: if I install Wireguard client on my Raspberry Pi - next to Nagios Core - will the Nagios Core then still keep running?

I hope I made my situation clear enough.

Hi @LonnyM, thanks for reaching out.

The system requirements for core are very low, but it really depends on how much you want to monitor. We generally suggest standalone systems for monitoring and to prevent component collisions.

That being said, it is likely that Nagios Core will have enough resources to keep running, but I would suggest that you backup your system before installing/running Wireguard, just in case.

If it does cause issues, one option you may want to consider is to use virtual machines to give you separation and control over the resources for each of those applications.

The option for using a virtual machine is indeed a good idea.

Can I also infer from your answer that I don't need to change any settings in Nagios if I install Wireguard?

Hi @LonnyM,

I am not familiar with what all Wireguard will change, so I can not give you a 100% guarantee. I think it should Core should just run. It is IP agnostic and will just run the configured checks.

Perhaps another forum member has some more experience with Nagios Core and Wireguard client on the same device.
