I am new to Nagios and see so many versions, add-ons and extras that I am not sure which configuration is best.

1. I want to install this in a network op center that will display information on a screen 24/7 < What is the best GUI for this?
2. We want to monitor our boxes at remote customer locations. <Is there a Windows Client that report back to Nagios Server? Does it require firewall or can it NAT traverse?

Can anyone help with a laundry list of items I will need?

That all depends on what kinds of things you're trying to see. Either Nagios Core or Nagios XI will give you summary screens that should be fine for this. If you want graphs, there are add-ons for that too (XI ships with PNP built-in). If you have multiple Nagios instances and want an overview of all of them, MNTOS is a very simple tool for that, and Nagios Fusion (available for pre-order) will be a more complete option.

We recommend one called NSClient++. There are two ways you could use it, the first being to open firewall ports for each end machine. The better way is to set up a Nagios instance on the LAN of the Windows machines, monitor them all from there, and then open just one firewall connection for that instance to report upstream.
