Migration/ Upgrade Plan of NLS 2.1.6 to 2024R1.3.1

Hello,
I have a cluster of 4 Centos6 servers with NLS -2.1.6 running on them. Both the O.S and Software are EOL and I'm planning on upgrading them to RHEL-9 and 2024R1.3.1.
I couldn't find a better documentation on achieving it without loosing current data. Has anyone did this before?

Hi @kboppana1,
Thanks for your note.
You might wish to consider going to NLS 2024R2. This is a significant backend and frontend update.
The major benefit in your situation is that we have a built-in migration process, right in the interface, in 2024R2, since even to move from 2024R1.3.1 to 2024R2 requires a full migration.
You can download 2024R2 and run it as a 30-day trial, or contact your CSM at
[email protected] to get an additional activation to set up the new cluster. Hands down this will be the easiest method for you. Your users and alerts and notifications and all your admin will migrate over as well.

Hello Aaron,
Thanks for your response! Based on what you said 2024R2 has a built in migration process and I'm assuming this is the available document regarding it.
https://assets.nagios.com/downloads/nag ... 2024R2.pdf
Where it also mentions briefly about
###Keep Your Old Data In Your Existing Cluster###
Install your new active Log Server cluster and follow the steps below to migrate your configs and
start sending your new data to NLS 2024R2 while still having your existing data available to you in
your old NLS cluster.
My question is:
In this case, after we finish installing 2024R2 and then choose migrate your data and provide my existing V2.1.6 details so the data will be migrated. but should I also complete installation of whole cluster before I chose to migrate or start with one server and migrate data and then add rest of the servers to cluster?
Should I perform any backup on existing setup before I attempt this?
Thanks for your help on this matter!

If it were me, I would stand up the whole new cluster, do the migration, and then point the log sources to the new cluster.
The migration copies data, it does not delete. Should you do a backup? It's always a good idea to have a backup. Two is one and one is none!

If you are going to remain with a pre 2024R2 version of Nagios Log server, have a look at the Operating System Compatibility Matrix:
https://support.nagios.com/kb/article/n ... -1045.html. I can't find what the newest version of NLS that can be installed on Centos 6 is, but if you can get up to 2.1.8 or 2.1.14, you can upgrade the OS to RHEL 8 or any of the EL9 versions respectively. From there you can get to the latest version of 2024R1, and if you get up to 2024R1.0.2, you can use it as a basis for migrating to 2024R2 as Aaron suggested.

Hi Jason,
Thanks for your input but I'm a bit confused. So are you saying that Installing 2024R2 and selecting the migration option and providing the details of existing 2.1.6 setup is not going to work?

Hi @kboppana1,
The support team tells me you also have a support ticket open on this issue. We'd like to keep the communication in one channel in one issue, so let's work the support ticket rather than this forum post.
Thanks,
Aaron

Hi Aaron,
I was the one who told the support Engineer that I created a post in Forum and shared your inputs to them. However, I closed the ticket that was opened for this migration.
I'm going to try
1. Procure new RHEL- 9 servers and install Nagios Log Server 2024R2.
2. Go through Migrate data option and see if it can migrate the data from NLS V 2.1.6 to new setup.
If the above migration doesn't work, then I will start to treat it as new environment and start creating alerts and access by comparing the old environment.
Please keep this open for my further comments as I try to do this from next week.
