Nagios Monitoring

Post by TomasCremin »

I'm curious after seeing a few mentions of nagios recently - what are people using with nagios for monitoring and what are you monitoring?
Agent wise - NCPA? NRPE? NRDP?
What do you check per Windows/Linux Server? (services that should be started, ports that should be open, CPU, memory, disk space, time drift, snapshots on Hyper-V, anything else?)
Do you monitor network devices (ports, SNMP for status of ports/bandwidth utilisation/cpu/memory/etc, anything else?)
Do you monitor vSphere? If so what agent?
Do you export data from nagios (e.g. do you use data from nagios for some sort of overview dashboard?)

Greetings @TomasCremin!

For me, I've found that XI is a great thing to have as a part of my personal home lab. It helps me track the status of domains and websites that I've built for other people and alerts me to changes immediately. That came in very handy just yesterday, actually. :)

My home lab is somewhat fluid because I have a proxmox server with all kinds of VMs that I want to play with at any given moment. Each VM's purpose seems to fall into slightly different use cases that are easily handled by one or more of the provided configuration wizards in XI. For the most part, basics are always good to have such as RAM, swap, disk space, etc.

For my personal use cases, I tend to lean on NCPA if I need an agent.

I haven't had a need to export any reports because my home lab is a personal hobby, but some of those reports would have REAL value for XI being used in a professional environment. Learning how they work might be a wonderful thing to bring into your professional life if that's something you might be interested in.

I hope this helps!

For the Agent discussion we generally lead people towards using NCPA. It is more of the standard now when using agents with XI. It will work for more OS's and should be easy to install. For more information on NCPA and its uses you can take a look at our website for it here.
