Ubuntu 18.04 (5.11.3) to Debian 12 (latest)

Hello All,

I'm trying to figure out how to get from a Ubuntu 18.04 installation with Nagios XI 5.11.3 to a Debian 12 system with the latest version. I have tried several approaches, but no luck so far. I tried to upgrade Ubuntu to a version that the latest Nagios version would support, but the in place upgrade failed. I tried just restoring the backup onto a Debian server, which failed as well. I'm not sure how to proceed with this. I'm starting to winder if I'm going to have to recreate everything by hand, which would not be cool. Could anyone please point me in the right direction?

Thanks,
-G

Hi,

I recon I will need to install 5.11.3 on Debian 12, restore my backup file, and then upgrade Nagios. I assume that the way to go?

Thanks,

When migrating you need to make sure that the current distribution you are on has the same version of xi that you have on the other linux distribution. I'll attach a link that shows the what versions of XI each distro supports to help with this process and a doc for the back up and restore process.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. Here's what I've got so far.

The 5.11.3 version of Nagios doesn't support Debian 12, so I installed Debian 11, installed Nagios 5.11.3, and restored the backup. The restore script said I needed to re-download the Nagios XI tar ball and all of the sub-components. I'm not sure exactly what is needed there. Is that necessary if I plan to upgrade to the latest version? Would the upgrade do that?

Thanks,
-G

Hi,

It looks like the Nagios tar.gz files are incomplete. This includes xi-5.11.3.tar.gz and the latest file as well. I guess I'll send an email to support.

Thanks,

Hey,

I'm a little confused on the situation. Did you follow the pdf above for the backup and restore process? At what point did it tell you that you need to redownload the tarball and the sub components? For a shortened version of the process you want to download the version of XI on the machine you want to restore too. Login and get it all set up and then run the back up process on your Ubuntu machine, transfer that backup to your Debian machine and then run the restore script. Does this sound similar to what you did and ran into issues with?
