Hi,

I have observed that when a particular host is down, nagios send out notification message for the server down as well as for the services configured on it. Do we have any functionality in nagios which will stop sending notification for services when the host itself is down.

You are not supposed to receive notifications about the services on a host that is down (this is the default behavior). Please, check your configuration, and see if you have "is_volatile" enabled. You can read more on the topic here:

The other issue we ave is about the notification Intervals

While configuring the hosts and services initially, we have kept the initial notification alert time period to 60(send a notification every hour if the service/host is not restored). Now we want to change the time period to 0, i.e stop sending repetitive notifications. Should I go to each service and change it manually? or can i jus change the value in the service and host templates? would this apply the setting to the existing services and hosts?

you can do that, or if you have 2012 you can go to

configure -> CCM -> Bulk Modifications

and do a bunch in one go...

This seems to be a feature available only in enterprise version...!!

We have created a new contact now on our system and want notifications send out to them - all notication for contact and select servers for another - do we need to login to each server and select the contact or is there another way??

As suggested by swilkerson, "Configure -> CCM -> Bulk Modifications" would be the easiest way to go. You don't have to buy the Enterprise Edition in order to do that. You can try the Enterprise features for free for 60 days. After this period is over, you are not going to be able to use the Enterprise Edition features but you are not going to lose any functionality, and you can continue using the Standard Edition. If you decide not to use this route, yes, you would have to login to each server.

We have 300 servers and want the new account to receive notification for each of them and associated services. If I go about adding the contact on each of the server manually, its going to take a lot of time. there isn't any other way to do it to take less time?

It was for this very reason the Bulk Modifications tool was created and added to the Enterprise version. Larger organizations found it tedious to manage services this way.

I would recommend enabling the trial of the Enterprise features, make your changes, check out the other Enterprise features.

If you like them you can upgrade but are not required to.

Additionally, while you are making the changes, may I recommend adding your contacts to 1 or more contact groups and add the contact groups to all the services.

This way, in the future when you need to create a new account, you just need to add the contact to the contact group and you are done.

if we add a contact to the host, would we receive an alert for any service being down on the host? Or do we need to add the contact to both host and the services configured on the host?

If you are a contact for a host you receive all service notifications, UNLESS the host is down, then service notifications will be suppressed but you will get the host notification.
