Newbie Static IP

Hi,

I was just handed the job of "Make Nagios use Static IP's". I don't know what that means. I did find a webpage http://10.30.1.4/nagios/ which shows a title with "Nagios Core Version 3.2.1". I'm not sure what to do. I've been spending the day reading from the Nagios website, but none of it makes any sense at all. I know the servers we have already have static IP's, but everything I read is not helping at all.

What is Nagios Core?
Where is it installed?
Do I run some software on that server?

My boss isn't giving me a hint and I don't know anything about Nagios or the servers at work since I'm new.

Andrew

What is Nagios Core?
Nagios Core is the open-source portion of the Nagios network monitoring system (as contrasted with Nagios XI, which is a proprietary product). It's job is to monitor your network and systems and alert you when something goes wrong. More information can be found on http://nagios.org/ and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nagios. If you're going to be working with it a bit, you may want to pick up a copy of "Learning Nagios 3.0" by Wojciech Kocjan [Packt Publishing, 978-1-84719-518-0].
Where is it installed?
Apparently on 10.30.1.4

Well, I really can't solve the problem of an uncommunicative boss, but my first guess is that maybe Nagios is currently set up to check systems by their hostnames, and he wants them checked by IP address?
