Hello,

We have Nagios XI 2009R1.3B installed, and working great; except for one piece. We have setup the e-mail alerts to use our exchange server. I am able to send a test message successfully, but no alerts (host/service) get sent out. I see the notification get generated in the reports section, but it never comes through to my mailbox.

In the contact, under 'misc', I changed the template to 'xi_contact_generic' after finding an article that seemed to relate to me. However, that did not correct my issue.

We are a large school district (Minnetonka), and hope to get this issue resolved so that we can finish evaluating the product and make a purchasing decision; but we need the e-mails to successfully send out of NagiosXI based on the host/service status indicators.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My first guess would be a configuration issue on the mail server. We've had some people in similar environments discover that Exchange was set up to block messages that didn't fit within particular parameters, and XI's notifications were tripping over those security rules. I'd suggest looking through the Exchange logs to see if the messages are at least getting to the SMTP server, and work from there.

(Also note that there are two options for sending notifications listed under Admin > Manage Email Settings, Sendmail and SMTP - if one doesn't work the other might.)

This is related to the nagiosadmin contact template. It should be changed from "generic-contact" to "xi_contact_generic".

I actually ended up finding my own answer. On the NagiosXI side, I had everything correct for SMTP, and my test message sent properly. However, I found an article that said to look at the sendmail configuration on the server side, and to make sure the SMART_HOST dns name was set properly. Sure enough, I looked, and it was set to the default, not our SMTP server. Once I changed that, I was almost done.

Then yes, I had to change the template from the default to the XI template on the user accounts. Once I did that, e-mail started to flow in immediately. I was happy.

Now, one more issue, and I'll have a complete monitoring solution. I'll post that issue in a new topic.
