Hello,

I'm installing Nagios on our network. I have Nagios core running. I have nagios-plugins and nrpe running on a couple of other machines. But our set it is as follows:

2 web servers, 1 dns server, 4 firewall routers, and 11 routers. There are Vlans in between all of that. Do I need to installed the Plug-ins and NRPE to see everything from my monitoring site (which is one of the servers)?? Or is there a different way to do this. I'm feeling like installing on 18 different machines is not exactly right. Thanks.

If you can access those machines from the vlan that nagios is on, no you would not need additional nrpe hosts to run the checks. If the devices are not directly accessible, nrpe is a good choice to monitor and send back to the nagios machine. I would also mention that your routers and switches do not need to have nrpe, and likely cannot, but instead snmp monitoring is very effective for them. The nagios XI wizards make it even easier to walk through if you haven't had a look at them yet.
