Hello,
I am new to nagios and currently looking for answers.
Questions:
1. Can Nagios be installed on a Win 2K8 server? If yes, where is the step-by-step guide? Are there videos I can follow?
2. Is it FREE to install on win2k8?
Thank you and I hope you can help me.

tonyarciaga,
Nagios runs primarily on unix and linux type kernels. However, you can download a virtual machine which will run on Windows server 2008 provided you install vmware or vmware player.

Hope that helps,

Okay so when I install it on VMWare, that's how Nagios work? Is that correct?
Does this mean I need to install VMWare on my WIN2K8 server for Nagios to handle it?
Please let me know.
Thanks

You can either download one of our VM images and open it via one of
these methods or spin a CentOS (or RHEL) VM, and install from source.
Please, see the available options on our main download page:

No, to get Nagios up and running use these options:
http://library.nagios.com/library/produ ... loads/main
You can install software to "play" the VM's on your Windows system, but to monitor that server you will need to configure a different portion of Nagios.
For instance, a couple ways to use Nagios in a pre-configured VM. You can download and install a program such as Hyper-V, or VMware Player, and then load the downloaded VM from our site. As lmiltchev said, you can also use one of those programs to load and install CENTOS/RHEL 5/6 as a VM, and then install Nagios from source. We have guides for this, please let us know which path you are looking to take.

Thanks Guys! I still have some questions. I will enumerate it below.
1. Lets say I have VMWare installed on my WIN2K8 server and loaded the VM file that you have on the downloads:
http://library.nagios.com/library/produ ... loads/main. Do I just configure to put my real server IP that I am trying to monitor in there and that's it? It will give me the statistics??
2. Is there an expiration date when I use Nagios? Is it really a free tool or it is necessary to purchase a license?
Hope you can answer 1 & 2. Let me know. Thank you.

Nagios XI has a 60 day free trial which you can use at your leisure, it includes all of the features that the fully licensed version does, and to purchase a license or with sales inquiries please contact
[email protected].
As far as the first question, I'm not quite sure what you are asking, when you load the VM, you would use the IP that is assigned to it either statically or via DHCP to connect to the web interface for your Nagios XI server. From here, you can start to add devices to monitor... Right now, I believe you are just trying to install Nagios XI. It seems you may not quite realize what Nagios XI is. I would give this passage a read over:
