How to properly maintain host / service group membership

I've run into host-group membership inconsistencies by creating host group memberships two different ways:
1. Auto-Discovery - Assigns host to host group
2. Manual - Assign host group to host
The problem is that if hosts are assigned to host groups, when browsing host group, membership can only be verified by grey text when scrolling through list.
Is there a way to correct so that host membership can be viewed via host group config?
Does the same also apply to service groups?

I am not sure I understand the question, you can verify if the host is a part of the hostgroup through the hostgroup management window. If hosts are greyed out, then their hostgroup membership is set on the host object level and must be changed there. But you are correct that there are two ways of doing this.

Yes.

This becomes very confusing as hosts have been assigned to host groups both ways.
The result is that 'Assigned' under host group management screen is inaccurate and causes end user confusion. I understand the grey text denotes membership, but that isn't immediately clear.
I'll direct users to home -> hostgroup grid, to verify membership.

The reason that they are displayed this way, is to denote how they are assigned. If you are modifying the hostgroup, and it has some that are assigned to it within its configuration, they show in the right hand pane. If however the host object its self references that it is assigned to the host group, it shows as greyed out. This is purely so that you know what is being directly modified and contained in the configuration you are working in now. I understand it can be confusing, and slightly less than intuitive, but it is done for good reason when troubleshooting later.
