SNMP Traps - Nagios XI and NSTI - MIB Uploading

Nagios XI and NSTI

Nagios SNMP Trap Interface (NSTI) is a stand alone product used for the searchability of trap tables, visualization of traps, and archiving of traps.

It does not require a Nagios Core or Nagios XI implementation, it can exist as a stand alone product on it's own dedicated server.

Nagios XI has it's own SNMP Trap receiving functionality that can be installed to submit received traps as Passive service check results for Nagios.

NSTI can also co-exist on a Nagios XI server however there are some subtle differences in relation to the uploading of MIBs that need to be explained.

Nagios XI has the ability to upload MIB files to extend SNMP related functionality. This is located in Admin > System Extensions > Manage MIBs.

There is a check box you can select called "Process Trap". The purpose of this option to to scan the MIB file for any SNMP Trap definitions and then update SNMP Trap related configurations with these trap definitions (called EVENTs). The following explains how this "Process Trap" feature works for different scenarios:

  • Nagios XI with NO SNMP Trap functionality installed
    • The upload will fail and no trap related configurations will be performed
  • Nagios XI with the NagiosXI-SNMPTrap-setup.sh installation
    • The upload will place trap EVENTs in /etc/snmp/snmptt.conf
    • These EVENTs will include EXEC statements
  • Nagios XI with NSTI installed
    • The upload will place trap EVENTs in files located in /usr/share/snmp/mibs/processed_mibs/
    • These EVENTs will NOT have EXEC statements
  • Nagios XI with the NagiosXI-SNMPTrap-setup.sh installation AND NSTI installed
    • The upload will place trap EVENTs in /etc/snmp/snmptt.conf
    • These EVENTs will include EXEC statements
