in the meantime I solved this... after 4 hours of trying. I stopped nagios core and run in the foreground and it appears to be a problem with the permissions on /var/tmp the sticky bit was not set anymore.. I wonder why this was not written in the mail.log or in the nagios.log hope it helps someone....

Hello, I have been troubleshooting without results. since sunday 8am nagios core do not send email/notifications anymore. i send custom notification via de web interface and nothing is sent, nothing appears on the mail.log i see the notificatons appear on nagios.log when I send via the command line....
