Virtual Machine benefits

Post by jon.bilderback »

What are the benefits of using the downloadable virtual machine compared to using our standard Linux OS for an install?

Thanks.

It depends on many things. For example, if you were a novice, using a virtual machine image would be a very easy and convenient way to go. However, if you were an advanced user, installing nagiosxi from a source, using your standard Linux OS would be perfectly fine.

Some of it is a matter of the size of your monitoring environment and personal preference. One thing I really like about VM's is the ability to take snapshots and then revert back as needed. This creates an easy backup and restore procedure for configuration changes. For some larger monitoring systems, sometimes a single dedicated server is a better option.
