Have a basic Nagios Core install on CentOS VM

Post by xpac »

I have a test CentOS VM (via virtualbox) set up on my laptop at the moment, eventually I plan to install Nagios in our production environment which right now consists entirely of CentOS 6.3 servers.

That said, the first thing I'd like to do is set it up for hard drive health monitoring, can somebody point me in the right direction for this? I just did the install following the instructions on the Fedora quickstart page, which involves installing plugins, however I'm not sure if I need additional plugins for this or just to configure those I've already installed.

It sounds like you are 100% new to Nagios. I strongly suggest that you start with the Nagios documentation at http://nagios.sourceforge.net/docs/3_0/quickstart.html and go beyond the install quickstarts to the Monitoring Public Services link. It gives you a good, basic understanding of what you need to do to configure hosts and services.

Once you've got that done, even if it's just monitoring your own host, then you can move on to figuring out what the other services are like check_disk and check_cpu and so forth.

Thanks, yes I'm new to Nagios and I plan to install it in our production environment soon after I've had time to thoroughly play around with it/modify it to do what I want it to do. While probably not the easiest thing to get set up initially, I feel like it is very powerful and will give me everything I need to monitor my network.

If you really want to see what some of the weird things you can do with Nagios are, you should attend the 2014 Nagios World Conference and go see Sally Reich's talk on monitoring beehives with Nagios! :-)

At any rate, definitely read up on the beginning quickstarts and then head over to the http://nagios.sourceforge.net/docs/3_0/config.html document and start looking at basic config (nagios.cfg) and then object config (http://nagios.sourceforge.net/docs/3_0/ ... bject.html) for hosts, services, and so forth. The more thought you put into Nagios, the better off you will be.

I'm going to go ahead and close this up since we haven't heard back from you in a bit, but if you have any specific questions feel free to open a new thread on the subject.
