Display Parent/Child relationships

Post by Fred Kroeger »

Hi is there an "easy" way to display the Parent and/or Child relationships for a given host?
HyperMap would be ideal, but with 500 hosts the screen is unreadable.

Hey Fred,

I'm experiencing similar issues. My hypermap looks like the attached image. I made a feature request some time agao for a searchbox, so we can at least search for a host in the hypermap, but apart from the searchbox, there should be a decent zoom function.

Grtz

Can't disagree with either of you, willem, do you happen to have a request ID that I can tag internally? Not sure if the hypermap is really the right location, I think a specific parent/child viewer would be far more useful, but thats me.

Sure Spenser => http://tracker.nagios.com/view.php?id=454

A specific parent child viewer would be nice too. but imo there are too many nagios xi components that are not really usable and need some kind of functional update. (Hypermap, Metrics, heatmap,...)

But I don't want to 'hijack' Fred's thread.. A specific parent child viewer component would be nice. :D

Added an internal feature request to this tracker post. Hopefully it will go somewhere, but my guess will be post-conference if anything.

Little birds have informed me that Eric[0] may be working on a more modern map using D3. No timeline, but this is being looked at!

Thanks all - have to agree with Willem that a lot of these components are OK for small environments but become useless when you monitor a moderate number of hosts.

Duly noted. Many of the mentioned components may just need a dropdown or two that can be used to limit the objects to a reasonable pool.
The maps all have an issue with "noise" once you reach a certain number of objects.
Don't get me started on the metrics component. Due to the nature of the extensibility of nagios plugins and their return formats, It is very difficult to make the metrics component work with all the different checks out there. For now, it is only guaranteed to work with our wizard checks as their formats/syntax is known and controlled. I have thought about using free variables to identify when a check result should be available in the metrics table, but the check must return a percentage or current/max in order to create the bar in the metrics table. So just a free variable will not guarantee that it works. I need to think about the metrics component some more it seems.
We are planning on a large maintenance pass on XI after the conference. I will add these concerns to the list.

Thanks. Imho the metrics should work with nrpe checks, as at this time they only seem to work with check_nt, which I don't use.
