How many macros for $USERX$?

I am working with a company that wants to use 30-40 $USERX$ macros in the resource.cfg because they have different passwords and usernames for several environments. The question is how many can they use?

I see in the official Nagios documentation (Written by Ethan several years ago) says that you can use multiple resource.cfg files and Nagios will "read them all". But the resource.cfg file itself says it will support 32. Just wondering if 32 is really the limit.

I thought this was increased to 256:

The nth user-definable macro. User macros can be defined in one or more resource files. Nagios supports up to 256 user macros ($USER1$ through $USER256$).
