Detech Remoted Desktop Cannot Login

Post by rajasegar »

Nagios XI 2014R1.2

Does anybody know how to detect if Remote Desktop Service is not responding?

Most of the time the Remote Desktop Service is reported as running, port 3389 responding. However when somebody tries to login using the Remote Desktop client it just waits forever without any response. Sometimes we can connect but only see blank screen.

Thanks in advance.

Do you see any errors in the apache error log when this happens?

Code: Select all

tail /var/log/httpd/error_log

Remote Desktop is running in Windows, why do we need to check on apache log?

He may have thought you were asking about the RDP option now on hosts in XI. You could do a port check on 3389, you could also check for the service itself, or the Windows server's event logs for failed remote access. Detecting what you are explaining will greatly depend on what the root issue is on the system(s), if your Windows admins can figure that out, we could help you figure out a solution to monitor for it.

That is the problem, we don't know the root cause. 3389 is responding fine, services running but it just freezes during rdp initiation or ends up with a blank gui and no logs in the event logs.

Wonder if there is any API or calls to get RDP to revert back with ok status.

That's exactly what I was thinking - there is a "Quick Actions" option "Connect To..." in XI, which allows you to connect to a host via RDP.
I asked for the apache error log as in the majority of the cases when there are blank pages in XI, you can usually find clues in the apache error log about what's causing it.
Are you using the "Connect To" link under "Quick Actions" to connect to the Windows box?

No, it is a general question on how to monitor Windows Remote Desktop Services.
The connection is done using the mstsc client.

I tested the "check_x224" plugin against Windows 7 and Windows Sever 2008 64-bit. I seemed to work just fine.
