Thanks for the note Fred, I made an internal bug report for us to look into this.
Nagios-Plugins maintainer exclusively, unless you have other C language bugs with open-source nagios projects, then I am happy to help! Please pm or use other communication to alert me to issues as I no longer track the forum.

Just out of curiosity is it possible to check the date/time on the EC2 instance you created? We had a problem internally where the date was off so far on some of our VMs we cloned from that it would cause problems with the certificates on the repositories because they were created in the "future" according to the server since it thought it was almost a year behind.
As of May 25th, 2018, all communications with Nagios Enterprises and its employees are covered under our new Privacy Policy.

My original thought was that it was a date/time issue but because I couldn't login to the server I couldn't confirm it.
Unfortunately the ec2-user is only created after all the nagios installs complete - so if they don't complete , you can't login!

Is this issue still happening (even though the box has internet access)?

I haven't created another instance so not sure.
My fix was as I documented earlier - edit the epel.repo to use http instead of https.
This allowed the installation to complete and all is working.
