False Ping notifications

Post by akepley »

Since Wednesday morning, we have experienced a weird issue with Nagios sending critical notifications for Ping.

The following notification is sent:

State: CRITICAL
Info:
CRITICAL - IP ADDR: rta 5399.587ms, lost 80%

A recovery notification follows 5 minutes later.

If I try to do a manual ping from nagios server to the same servers, I never get errors, it continually pings forever. I've also tried pings from several other servers to each other without issue.

I have since restored configuration to a point before the Wednesday morning when the problem began. This did not resolve the issue.

Nagios is sending out the notifications about once an hour, always for a different server.

Have you been able to check the ping statistics at the same time these critical alerts are generated? I ask because this looks like an intermittent network issue as some packets were able to get to the remote host and back.
