Enterprise Features, Licensing & Listing Issues

Post by TBT »

Issue 1: License warning.
We have Enterprise Site-Wide licensing[1] on our 9 production environment (Nagios XI 2014R1.5) servers. Users have reported the Enterprise features are not available and display a licensing warning[2].

This behavior is present while logged in through fusion and also direct to an XI server. I too have replicated this issue by navigating Enterprise features: Scheduled Reports, SLA Report, Capacity Planning, etc. However, while directly logged into XI and navigating to Admin > License Information, then revisiting the Enterprise features, the licensing warning disappears and features are available.

Issue 2: Scheduled Report listing.
Further more, once the license warning disappears, information between sessions differs. While logged in through Fusion to an XI server (Session pass-though from Fusion as fusion user) viewing Scheduled Reports a listing is displayed[3], but direct login to an XI server (As admin user) viewing Scheduled Reports the listing is empty[4].

Please advise.

I believe, the only thing that could possibly cause this behavior is the following scenario:
- your license expired
- you renewed but you didn't hit "Update License" on all of your XI boxes

Can you log in all of your 9 XI servers, revisit the "License Information" page, and click on "Update License" button? Did this fix the issue?

BTW, are the two "Scheduled Reports" screenshots that you posted from different XI servers?

1. So the "Update License" button needs to be clicked upon annual renewal, even though status is active and the license key didn't change?

2. I've followed your suggestion and clicked the update license button across all 9. There isn't a way to tell if this fixed the issue because as I stated above, navigating to Admin > License Information, then revisiting the Enterprise features, the licensing warning disappears and features are available. I'll have to wait and see if end-users experience it again.

3. Issue 2 screenshots are both from the same sever, logged in using the two different methods as described.

Update: Testing this further, Scheduled Reports only display reports created by the user currently logged into XI. As an Admin the expected result is to see ALL reports, by ANY user.
Also, if the user is logged into Fusion and passes-through to an XI server, then creates a report, it can be viewed by all fused users. This confusing and not intuitive from an administrative perspective.

I am not 100% sure about that - I will have to check with our sales team. Did you renew your license PRIOR to the expiration date, or after it expired?

Let us know if end-users run into the same issue.
As an Admin the expected result is to see ALL reports, by ANY user.
Users can set up their own reports, dashboards, views, etc. I am not sure if the nagiosadmin user should see ALL of the reports from other users... You may have hundreds or thousands of reports... In any case, you can masquerade as a user it review his/her reports at any time. If you believe this behavior needs to be changed, you are welcome to post a feature request on our bug tracker here:

Our licensing has always been renewed prior to expiration and if I recall correctly, the key has never changed.

TBT,

Quick question, in Admin -> Manage System Config
Do you have "Automatically Check for Updates" unchecked?

I'm thinking the maintenance expiration date isn't getting updated. It updates on the check for updates and during installation of a new version, and when you hit the license page. If you are behind a proxy, the installation of new version may not be updating, but will update if you visit the license page if you have the proxy component configured.

Hey Scott,

Automatically check for updates is set across all servers, always has been.

TBT,

I looked over the code, and although I thought the maintenance expiration date was updated on the daily update, it was not implemented as expected..

This will be resolved in all version > 2014R2.4, however if you have visited the license page on all of your servers it should no longer be an issue.
