Monitor presence of a serial device

Post by ctreppish »

Can Nagios be used to monitor the presence of a device on a serial port?

We would like to be notified if the device is disconnected from the workstation.

Thanks

I don't think there is currently a way to do this, however it is possible to write a plugin for it.

I'm going to be honest. I have not done scripting or programming before and am having a difficult time with this. Typically, I've done more architecture things but this is a hot button for our company right now and if I can get this to work I will have total justification to buy Nagios over other things being considered.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Carl,

What operating system do you want to monitor the devices on?

Duh....I suppose that would be helpful information.

This will be run on Windows XP. It is to keep track of a serial device in the stores.

Thanks
