Re: Network Wizard - scan down interfaces

I got around the Network Interface down showing critical status by using the Negate command.
That way while it is down it will show OK and your reports will be accurate. The great thing about Negate is that if anyone ever plugs something into that Port (so that the real status is now OK), you will get an alert and know that someone is doing something they shouldn't. If you disable the monitoring of the port then you'll never know.

I did some testing of the Network Wizard and here is how it works.

If you check the box called "Scan Interfaces" when you start the scan, it will check the Admin status of the interfaces and if it is down, it will not be in the list to be checked.
If the box is unchecked, it will add all of the interfaces to the list that will be checked regardless if the interface is Administratively down or not.
Does that help out?

For me yes - thanks for this tip.
Actually in our company if interface is down - no one is using it and it must be in Admin Down state.
Every week/month once we do device scan based on request from our network team and re-adding or removing interfaces that needs to be add or remove.

Thanks

paulol,

Upgrade your Network Switch / Router wizard to the latest.
In NagiosXI, go to "Admin" > "Manage Config Wizards" > click the "Check for Updates" button and Click the "Download" link for the Wizard and download and install it.
See if that works for you.

paulol,

I take back what I said earlier. I must of had a web browser cache issue.
If the interface is Administratively down, the Network Switch Wizard will not show that port in the list.
The only way to get it to show up is to enable it and then scan it.

Or making necessary changes in script it self to handle ports that is administratively down.
Please do not forget, that there is not only just simple service check.
The script is handling as well the MRTG configuration.
At first you need to change how the cfgmaker are grabbing the interfaces in script.
And also, if you ignore the DOWN interfaces you will have always those ports in MRTG configuration, even if it is not active.

My ports was administratively down by default.
But i cant enable them, because the rules of my company prohibit me to do that.

I'll see the script and make the necessary changes for ports administratively down works.

thks.
