KVM switch plugin

Post by Datamuncher »

Hi,

Don't know if this question belongs here...I am looking for plugins to monitor KVM switches from Aten (Altusen series). I have searched through the net and the Nagios Exchange. So far, I found nothing.
Are there generic plugins that can do this ? Or are there specific plugins that are available but couldn't be found by me ?

any info would be appreciated.

I looked around as well and didn't see anything specifically.

What sort of things are you wanting to monitor? Most KVMs I have used are "dumb" devices that are just used for I/O and don't have SNMP or anything like that. Granted I haven't spent a ton of time in DCs, but that's my two cents.

Hi there !

That's what I figured out too afterwards...Monitoring wise I was thinking of which ports are connected/enabled, if ports have sessions running, that sort of things. Since these devices appear to be 'dumb', I guess I have to suffice with a simple ping to see if the device is 'alive' .

cheers!

You'll drive yourself nuts if you try to monitor everything that has an RJ-45 socket in your datacenter... but kudos to you for having the interest :)

FWIW, I used Avocent DSR series KVMs in ma past-life. They're somewhat of a Cadillac of IP KVM switches, and far overpriced at about $300/port. I would discourage the use of KVM altogether because baseband management is so much more mature, usable and MONITORABLE these days. I'm sure the growout of your datacenter is far pass the point of making decisions like this, however if you do want to monitor KVM switches the DSR series from Avocent (probably outdated and replaced with something even fancier) did have a full SNMP architecture making it very monitorable.

I'm going to go ahead and lock this thread as it seems we have your question covered. Thanks!
