Source install vs VM?

Hello all. I want to do a "fresh" upgrade (download backup, up new instance of NagXI, upload backup). We're a Centos shop, so I'm comfortable w/ the Linux aspects of it but are there other advantages to doing the VM vs a source install?

With our VM it is a system we are familiar with support-side, so we can guarantee it will work. Doing a source install is just as valid, but it needs to be on a clean, minimal CentOS or RHEL system otherwise there could be dependency issues.
