This is quite intertwined with your other post about DB errors for apache. Let's work on correcting that thread first than come back to this. I know there is several people working on testing the other thread right now, we should have a further response shortly.

I had a similiar problem of the reports hanging on a single cpu/8core 8gb ram Nagios server. This does not look like your problem. Ours was we had over 22K service checks going. It was just busy. We are down to 11K service checks and reports are ok now. We are also looking into splitting our server up into multiple servers so we can get back those removed service checks. The powers are happy with what Nagios can accomplish.
