Thank you for your help and follow-up. It appears Log Server won't fit into our environment.
The mail server we are having problems connecting to is hosted at NetworkSolutions and we have no control over its configuration or settings. Unfortunately, this is the server we would want to use for alarms.
As mentioned in an earlier message, we are able to make connection to one of our (own) mail servers via L2L VPN. (I did find the test messages in the 'suspicious mail' junk box.)

To make you aware, I have submitted a bug report with a reference to this forum post. Still not certain if this is a bug in NLS or some issue that cropped up as a result of your particular implementation.
