NagiosXI Services Bugging

Post by haile711 »

Hello everyone,
I have new to NagiosXI. I have Nagios 2014R2.7 installed to RHEL 5, currently I am using a free version waiting on the license to come in. I have configured some hosts, and services. This is where I have a problem, when I configured my services and linked it to a host, it show up for all the other hosts; even though, I don't link it to the other hosts. If anyone has ever ran into this issue, please advise. Just a curiosity, it is because I'm currently using the free trial? Thanks in advance!!

Did you link it to a hostgroup on accident? Or does that service use a template that would attach it to a hostgroup?

There is no functional difference between the trial and the full software. The free license only limits you to 7 hosts.

No I have check over and over, I have not linked it to any other hosts, just one particular hosts, and I'm not using any template.

No...

You almost certainly have it linked upstream by means of a template or have added the service to a hostgroup. This would be difficult for us to troubleshoot without seeing your system, but we can tell you how.

Look at your service definition in /usr/local/nagios/etc/services/ - it should be in files with a hostgroup or host name there, you can use `grep <myservicedescription> to dig it out.

In those definitions you'll want to trace your service upwards through its templates (note the "use" line) and verify that hosts or hostgroups aren't attached there.

Nagios doesn't randomly attach services to hosts - finding out why they're attached in your case may just be tricky.

This is true, whenever I attached a "hostgroup". The view in "Host Group Status" is messed up, there are services from one hosts being attached to another host. Can we not use this template? the Hostgroup template. Thanks again!!

It sounds like you're not understanding the difference between hostgroups and templates?

Templates are simply there to make the reusable directives available to many hosts, services, and contacts without having to define them explicitly in their respective definition. A template CAN specify a hostgroup for a host or a service.

Hostgroups are the linkage between hosts and services. They are also organizational entities within the UI, but they're mostly used simply to tie services and hosts (2 totally separate types of objects) together quickly and easily so they don't have to be explicitly defined in each service definition. A hostgroup CAN NOT specify a template for ... anything.

This is the document you need.

Hey jdalrymple,
Thank you for replying, and sorry for this misunderstanding. I've tried and tried to attached the Hostgroup I defined as "WSSG" hostgroup to monitor the whole WSSG host applications. Everytime, I added all the hosts belong to this Hostgroup it messes up my view under "Hostgroup overview". Am I doing something wrong? Thanks again for all the help.

Could you provide a screen capture of your "Hostgroup Overview" showing the issue and could you post the host group WSSG so we can review it?

Hey tgriep,
attachments are the SS of the hostgroups, servicegroup and hostgroupoverview. Sry i have to wiped out the name, company policy. As u can see in the service group. there should be 7 services in the xxxx531 and 6 services for the rest. But in the hostgroup overview, there are 8 services in the xxx531, 7 services in the the rest except in xxx628 has 6 services that is correct. in the hostgroup grip view its also mix matched the services as you can see, in the services mix matched 531 and 628 for the xxx531 services. I hope you understand, what I'm trying to point out. Please let me know if you have any question. Thanks

Can you show us some screenshots from core Configuration Manager (CCM) showing exactly how you have attached this hostgroup and where.
